Exploring the Role of Moral Elites in Shaping Societies

MORALITES (Moral Elites: The Historical Positioning of Civil Society Leaders in National Moral Economies) is an EU-funded research project that investigates how civil society leaders have historically influenced social welfare, political institutions, and public discourse. Through a comparative study of Italy, Poland, the UK, and Denmark, we explore the role of moral elites in shaping national moral economies from the late 19th century to today.

Societal Impact

The MORALITES project explores the historical and contemporary influence of moral elites—civil society leaders, intellectuals, and activists—on social norms, policies, and governance. By analyzing their role in shaping welfare systems, industrial relations, and moral economies, the project provides insights into how societies evolve through ethical leadership and ideological struggles.

Understanding Civil Society’s Role

The project highlights how nonprofit organizations, religious groups, and intellectual networks contribute to shaping public debates, welfare policies, and social justice initiatives.

Bridging Historical and Contemporary Issues

By tracing the long-term influence of moral elites, MORALITES connects past governance models with present-day challenges, offering a framework to analyze power, responsibility, and ethical leadership in modern society.

Strengthening Democratic Engagement

Through its research, the project fosters a deeper understanding of how civil society leaders advocate for marginalized communities, influence policy, and challenge inequalities, ultimately promoting more inclusive governance structures.

Interdisciplinary and Public Engagement

MORALITES actively engages with scholars, policymakers, and the public, encouraging dialogue between history, sociology, and political science to inform present-day debates on democracy, justice, and social responsibility.

By shedding light on the mechanisms of elite influence, MORALITES helps societies reflect on the ethical foundations of leadership, promoting a more informed and engaged citizenry.
